While there are no direct international flights to Puerto Escondido, you can easily connect through major hubs like Mexico City (MEX) or Guadalajara (GDL). From these cities, it’s a short domestic flight to Puerto Escondido. Once you arrive in Puerto Escondido, we suggest taking a taxi from the airport to your accommodation.
Tip: If you’re on a budget, avoid catching a taxi right outside the airport, as these will cost you 500-600 pesos (approximately $30-$35) to reach your hotel. Instead, head straight outside the arrivals hall at the airport, then turn right and walk approximately 5 minutes down to the highway. There will be local taxis waiting here that will take you to your accommodation for around 200 pesos (approximately $12).
After you’ve settled in, the best way to get around and explore the local area is by renting a scooter or ATV. Puerto Escondido isn’t very walkable, so having your own transportation is key to making the most of your trip.
We highly recommend Sunset Scooters Puerto Escondido if you’re staying in the Zicatela area.
We rented an ATV for 1100 pesos for 3 days (approximately $65), but keep in mind you’ll also need to pay a refundable 2000 peso deposit (approximately $120).

This is where we stayed when we visited Puerto Escondido, and we couldn’t recommend it enough. This relaxed hotel is within walking distance of Zicatela Beach. It has an incredible rooftop with views of the waves, as well as a rooftop swimming pool and a hammock area to chill after a day of surfing. We’d go as far as to say that the rooftop is the best place to watch the sunset in Puerto Escondido.
Price Range: $85 per night, offering a touch of luxury on a budget.
Casa Joseph Zicatela
If budget is no issue, then we would suggest Casa Joseph Zicatela. This adults-only boutique resort is right next to Zicatela Beach and offers luxurious private suites with sweeping views of the ocean.

Selina Puerto Escondido

Zicatela Beach is the main reason we visited Puerto Escondido. It is the crown jewel of Puerto Escondido’s surf scene and the reason many surfers flock to this coastal town. Known as the “Mexican Pipeline,” Zicatela offers some of the most powerful and challenging waves you’ll find anywhere, making it a magnet for experienced surfers looking to test their skills.
The waves at Zicatela are renowned for their size and power, often reaching heights of 10-20 feet. These heavy, barreling waves break over a sandy bottom, creating the perfect conditions for advanced surfing maneuvers and spectacular tube rides. The surf here is consistent year-round, but the best swells typically occur between May and October.
Due to the sheer power and size of the waves, Zicatela is best suited for experienced surfers. The strong rip currents and heavy shore break can be intimidating, so it’s essential to have a high level of skill and confidence in the water.
You’ll typically find surfers here early in the morning and just before sunset. We were warned to be careful of the locals as they can be quite aggressive, but we didn’t find this at all. People were welcoming and respectful, provided you had the skills to surf here.
One interesting thing we noted was that most of the locals didn’t wear a leash. This is because it’s easy to get your board broken here, and it’s better to just let your board wash up on shore.
If you decide to paddle out at Zicatela, be prepared for a thrilling ride and remember to respect the locals!
La Punta

La Punta is another fantastic surf spot in Puerto Escondido, perfect for those looking for a slightly less intense but still thrilling surfing experience.
Located at the southern end of Zicatela Beach, the waves here are generally mellower than Zicatela, making it an excellent spot for intermediate surfers looking to hone their skills.
The left reef break provides long, rideable waves that are less intimidating than the powerful barrels of Zicatela. This spot allows for plenty of practice on turns and maneuvers, making it a great place to improve your surfing.
One thing to note is that La Punta can get very busy, especially during peak surfing times in the morning and late afternoon. The vibe here is friendly and laid-back, but it’s always good to be mindful of surf etiquette and give other surfers their space.
Tip: There is a surf shop right on the beach called Punta Surf School. They rent boards for 150 pesos an hour (approximately $10), which is convenient if you don’t have your own gear. They also offer 2-hour surf lessons for 900 pesos (approximately $55), making it a great option for those looking to get some guidance and improve their technique.
Playa Carrizalillo

One thing to note is that this beach can get very busy, especially during peak times and weekends. The atmosphere is friendly and encouraging, but it’s always a good idea to arrive early to secure a good spot and avoid the crowds.
Tip: You can rent a surfboard here for 250 pesos an hour (approximately $15), or get a private 1-hour surf lesson for 1000 pesos (approximately $60). Located just by the parking area at La Punta, you’ll find La Punta Surf School. This school quoted us 150 pesos (approximately $10) an hour to rent a board. They offer a variety of boards suitable for different skill levels, from beginner foam boards to advanced shortboards. The convenience of being right on the beach means you can hit the waves as soon as you’re geared up.
Playa Carrizalillo
You’ll find a place to rent surfboards on the steps down to the beach here. They quoted us 250 pesos (approximately $15) an hour, which we thought was a bit pricey. We’d suggest trying to negotiate the price down to 150 pesos if you can. The selection includes longboards and funboards, which are perfect for the gentle waves at this beach. The rental shop also provides rash guards and surf wax.
Zicatela Beach
For Zicatela, you’ll need to bring your own board. Very few shops will rent to you if you surf here as it’s not uncommon for boards to get dinged or snapped. We actually suggest bringing 2-3 boards if you plan on surfing this spot, so you always have a backup.

Tip: El Cafecito gets super busy with a queue forming from 8 am, so aim to get there before then.
